In the summer of 2000 Chicago Scene founder and long-time boater Ted Widen gathered a small group of friends and their boats and headed out to the “Playpen,” a protected area just East of Lake Shore Drive at Chicago Ave and just north of Navy Pier and the Chicago water purification plant.
He brought out some of Chicago’s best DJs and had them play on the flybridge of the main boat with a huge sound system that stopped traffic on Lake Shore Drive. That first year 50 boats came together and tied up making it the largest “Tie Up” in Chicago at that time. Each year after that the party doubled in size until he got to the 500-1000 boat range where we stand to this day.
This was the birth of the “Chicago Scene Boat Party,” an annual event that is now the largest on Lake Michigan.
Ted Widen is also a Realtor in the Chicago market with Baird & Warner Real Estate as well as running a boat charter business called Chicago Sailboat and Yacht Charters.
The Chicago Yacht Club, established in 1875, is a distinguished institution that represents a significant part of Chicago’s maritime heritage. Nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan, this prestigious club has played a pivotal role in nurturing yachting culture in the Midwest, serving as a social and sporting hub for sailing enthusiasts. This essay explores the history, cultural impact, and modern role of the Chicago Yacht Club.
The inception of the Chicago Yacht Club dates back to the late 19th century, a time when Chicago was rapidly expanding both economically and culturally. The founding members were visionary leaders who recognized the potential of Lake Michigan as a sporting and recreational venue. The club started with a modest fleet and a dedicated group of sailing aficionados, quickly establishing itself as a cornerstone of yacht racing in the Great Lakes region.
Over the years, the club has been instrumental in promoting the sport of sailing through organized races, educational programs, and community outreach. It has hosted numerous prestigious regattas, including the Chicago-Mackinac Race, which has become one of the oldest annual freshwater distance races in the world. This event, often called “The Mac,” starts off Navy Pier in Chicago and finishes at Mackinac Island, Michigan, challenging sailors with varying wind conditions and strategic demands.
The Chicago Yacht Club is more than just a sporting organization; it is a cultural institution that has contributed significantly to the social fabric of Chicago. It has been a gathering place for individuals from diverse backgrounds, united by their passion for sailing. The club’s activities have fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among members, often transcending the mere sport of sailing to include social events, charitable activities, and community service.
Moreover, the yacht club has been a custodian of maritime traditions, preserving sailing heritage while also adapting to modern times. It has supported marine conservation efforts and promoted sustainable practices in boating, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship.
Today, the Chicago Yacht Club continues to be a leader in the world of yachting, both nationally and internationally. It actively promotes sailing through youth programs and sailing schools, aiming to inspire the next generation of sailors. These programs not only teach the technical skills required for sailing but also instill values such as teamwork, respect for nature, and resilience.
In addition to its educational initiatives, the club plays a significant role in the economic and tourism sectors of Chicago. The events it hosts bring in visitors from around the globe, contributing to local tourism and showcasing Chicago as a vibrant, waterfront city.
The Chicago Yacht Club stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of sailing and the communal spirit it fosters. From its historic races to its educational programs and its role in community building, the club embodies a rich tradition of maritime excellence and cultural significance. As it sails forward, the Chicago Yacht Club remains a beacon of innovation and community in Chicago’s dynamic landscape, continuing to influence both the sport of sailing and the cultural life of the city it calls home.
